2020 Virtual Summer School Games
Last week saw us breaking over 2000 entries since week 1, 2273 to be precise!
It was a tough one for physical fitness but we saw 760 entries for Tuck In, Tuck Out from more than 60 schools.
Week 4, we are challenging all pupils, teachers and an increasing number of pets to the Tennis Tap Up Challenge!
The challenge card is attached and is available alongside our video hosted by Rufus (Young Leader from Ashton Park School), Louise Hunt (2x Wheelchair Tennis Paralympian with 13 singles titles and 41 doubles) and Samantha Murray-Sharan (Professional British Tennis Player winning 4x Single Titles and 21 Doubles Titles)!
You’re all making our job very hard at picking the Spirit of the Games awards for each week. We are receiving hundreds of videos/ pictures and emails demonstrating the School Game Values of Respect, Teamwork, Self-belief, Passion, Honesty and Determination. Please continue to share our message to your pupils of keeping up the amazing work at achieving their personal best!
Don’t forget to Tag us @WesportAP using #WesportVirtualGames and @YourSchoolGames.
Thanks everyone and good luck this week! Let’s see if we can break 3000 entries by the end of this week’s challenge.
If your school hasn’t taken part so far it’s not too late- we have two weeks of challenges left to take part in at home or at school!
If you have any further questions do not hesitate to get in touch.
Kind regards,

Welcome to the West of England Summer School Games Virtual Challenge hosted by our School Games Ambassador Simran Kaur and Young Leaders from Ashton Park School!
The virtual challenge was developed in association with your School Game Organisers and is an activity that you can do in your home, yard or garden or at school. It gives you the chance to achieve your personal best and take part with other children from across B&NES, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset!
Every Monday at 10am we will post a new video and challenge card below.
School Games Ambassador Simran Kaur
Our Young Leaders will demonstrate the activity and let you know the rules. All you need to do is practice the activity and get a member of your family or teacher to record your results of the challenge and submit them by 11.59pm on the Sunday. We would love to see any pictures or videos of your challenge attempts!
Each activity will be open for 1 week and you will be able to download your own personal best certificate for each challenge you enter. We will be looking out for the School Game values in all that you do! Passion, Determination, Self-belief, Respect and particularly for the virtual entry system Honesty. We also challenge you to work on your Teamwork by doing your bit to represent your school (even if you are at home!) and where you are able to, encourage your siblings and friends to take part too. A point will be awarded to your school for every child that takes part.
After all 5 weeks of challenges, on our planned Summer School Games multi-event day Tuesday 7th July we will be holding a celebration of our Virtual Summer School Games where the best videos and pictures of people demonstrating the school game values will be shared and the most active school will be announced!

Design a School Sports Team Logo
Please see below information from Shane German of North Somerset Schools PE Association about a fun competition that he is running.
I am pleased to launch a new creative challenge with you all:
Most of the world’s top sports teams have a logo that is instantly recognisable. This logo is really important in representing the character of the team in the eyes of the players, members and supporters. The logo not only identifies the team, but should also represent the characteristics and qualities of the organisation/team it represents.
We invite pupils to design their own unique school sports badge. As an example, St James’ Primary may choose to become the St James’ Jaguars, or the St James’ Superstars. As well as creating an eye-catching design, think carefully about how this may positively represent the sporting values of your team (and school).
Please can entries be emailed to me at sarah.bishop@staff.northleaze.n-somerset.sch.uk no later than Monday 1st June where I will ask other members of staff to help me to identify an overall school winner, who will receive a certificate and a medal. A certificate will also be shared for all children that have submitted a design. Our Northleaze winning design will then be sent to North Somerset Schools PE Association where they will identify an overall winner.
The winning designer across the NSSPEA will have their logo professionally created and presented on a set of PE/Sports t-shirts to be worn at future sporting events.
Please design your Northleaze school sports team logo on the attached sheet.
I am really looking forward to seeing all of your wonderful designs!

Wednesday 1st April
I hope you are all keeping well and managing to squeeze in some keep fit and exercise into your day. I am noticing with my two children that they are much happier in themselves after some exercise. The type of exercise is different for all of us. For my son, this means spending some time out on the drive practising his basketball skills; for my daughter, trying out some dance exercises; my husband, an online gym workout and for me, a nice walk with Herbie.
My mum (who is 73) is loving starting her day following the Joe Wicks workout. She's finding it is really helping her to start the day with a positive mindset. My family have had a lot of fun trying out some Les Mills dance workouts on YouTube. There are also some fun musical theatre dances that you can learn. After trying to learn the dance to 'You can't stop the beat' from Hairspray, I am now discovering just how uncoordinated I am!
Here's Herbie looking slightly confused as we all dance around the lounge!
I have added some new ideas to keep active below. Have a look at the updated healthy body and minds document from the North Somerset Schools PE Association. It's full of some great ideas of things to do. Some links to resources from England Athletics have been added.
There is also a great new challenge set by Mr German to see if you can 'climb every mountain'.
For our tennis players, if you are on Facebook, have a look at LTA - Tennis For Britain. They are regularly posting some really good exercises that children can try at home to develop tennis skills.
For our basketball players, have a look at NBA UK on Facebook, for basketball drills that can be practised in a small space.
I'd love to hear how you are all managing to keep active! My email is sarah.bishop@staff.northleaze.n-somerset.sch.uk

Version 3 from NSSPEA - lots of great ideas of how to stay active in this document!
Throwing and Catching Skills
Whilst the sun is shining, if you are lucky enough to have an outdoor space, use the opportunity to get outside and practice some ball skills.
Here's Herbie enjoying a game of catch with me.
If you have someone else in your family to play with, practice simple throwing and catching to each other. If you find catching tricky, this can be with a beanbag, large ball, balloon etc. If you are a confident catcher, use a tennis ball and have a bigger distance between you (as large as your outdoor space allows!). Try underarm and overarm throws. How many can you do without dropping the ball? How many can you do without it going over a neighbours fence?!!!
If you are on your own, practice throwing the ball up in the air and catching it. How many can you do? Try throwing it in the air and clapping before catching it. How many claps can you do? Can you throw a ball in the air, spin round and then catch it? Throw the ball in the air, touch the ground and catch the ball. See how many different tricks you can do.
Don't forget to keep your eye on the ball!
Lots of ideas to keep you all active in these two documents
School Closure
I will use this part of the website to put ideas for ways that you can help your children to keep fit and active during this period of school closure.
Physical activity is incredibly important for mental health and wellbeing and it has been proven that children will learn better after exercising, so please try to fit in some exercise every day. Our children will be going from running around at break times and lunchtimes, running the daily mile, taking part in PE lessons and participating in numerous after school clubs, to suddenly being in the house for the majority of the day. We are going to have to be creative in finding ways of keeping up that step count!
I will share here all of the ideas that I come across and will try to add a few of my own to keep the children active and entertained. I may occasionally get my dog involved to make the children smile, as many of them enjoy talking to me about their pets and ask me about my dog!
My email is sarah.bishop@staff.northleaze.n-somerset.sch.uk if parents would like to send through any photos of their children keeping active or have any different ideas that I can add here to share with our Northleaze family. If you do send through any photos please can you let me know if you are happy for them to be added to the website or printed off to put up in school. I would love to make a display of these photos in the hall when we are back at school.
