Other Curriculum Areas

On this page, you will find a range of activities for different subjects. These are extra ideas which could be done after English and Maths each day - maybe in the afternoons. Each week, choose one piece of learning that you are especially proud of, take a photo of it and ask you parents to email it to the Year 5 email address. Mrs Simmons or Mrs Bertenshaw will be looking at your learning this week; they can't wait to see what you produce.

PSHE

In light of the recent events in the US and the current Black Lives Matter movement around the world, we thought this is an important topic to explore and discuss as a family this week. Please see the power point attached.

You might like to find Martin Luther King's famous 'I have a dream' speech. Discuss the meaning behind it and why we are still having this discussion years on. Particularly focus on the quote, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Science

In this lesson, you will be finding out how metamorphic rocks are formed.  You will also be looking at how fossils form in sedimentary rocks.

Before you start the lesson, think about these questions:

How do we know about dinosaurs?

Have you ever seen a fossil?

Do fossils show what the living thing looked like?

Make sure you have a pencil, ruler and some coloured pencils ready. The worksheet is below for your to download and print or you can just write on paper.

Click on the link to start your lesson: https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/how-is-sedimentary-rock-formed

Start by having a go at the quiz. Try your best but don’t worry of you get something wrong.

Then watch the video. Pause it when asked and complete the tasks set out the worksheet or on paper. During the video Miss Simkin carries out a demonstration to show how sedimentary rocks are formed using grated chocolate. Maybe you could try this yourself at home!

Next, create your own edible sedimentary rock model: https://rainydaymum.co.uk/edible-sedimentary-rock-activity/.

Or, you could try making your own fossil following these instructions: https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/make-your-own-fossils-1250912

Art

This week, we will be developing our drawing and sketching skills. Make sure you have a piece of paper, a sharp pencil and a rubber ready. Click on the link below which will take you to a brilliant family youtube channel where the whole family love art and teach you how to draw loads of different things!

Follow the videos to develop your drawing skills. They all go step by step. Watch a little bit and pause while you complete the same bit. When you are ready, play again. Stop, start and rewind as often as you need to.
