Other Curriculum Areas

On this page, you will find a range of activities for different subjects. These are extra ideas which could be done after English and Maths each day - maybe in the afternoons. Each week, choose one piece of learning that you are especially proud of and ask you parents to take a photo of it and email to the Year 2 email address to show Mrs Bertenshaw and Miss Taylor.

Art

You could create some art inspired by Andy Goldsworthy.

Create your own picture or pattern with natural materials by using things you find. Go on a walk or look in your garden. Gather some small items together – leaves, petals, grasses, pebbles (don’t break bits off of trees or plants please!). Then, arrange your items to make a pattern or picture. You could take photos of your work to share.

Science

This term's science learning is about plants, with this week's focus being on trees. For this lesson, you will need a pencil, ruler, tape measure, a magnifying glass (if you have one) and a worksheet.

Before you start the lesson, think about what different plants you know. Can you think of examples of trees? Can you think of examples of flowering plants, plants that grow from bulbs or seeds, and plants that you can eat?

Click here to view the Espresso video ‘Why are plants important?’ To view the video, you need to log in using the details in the 'Suggested websites' folder.

Today we are going to focus on trees. The main parts of a tree are crown, leaves, trunk, branches and roots.

Please log in to the Espresso webpage and view the video about ‘Trees’ Click here Then complete the activities-  Sorting trees, Parts of a tree, Trees quiz.

Activity: Go outside in your garden or find a tree within walking distance from your home.

Make an observational drawing of a tree and label its parts (crown, leaves, trunk, branches, roots)

Find a leaf from your tree and look carefully at it under a magnifying glass and draw what you see as accurately as you can. With a crayon, do a rubbing of the bark. Then complete the measuring activities on your sheet.

The worksheet provides a guide for the task.  If you do not wish to print it out, tasks can be completed on paper or in a notebook.

History

Who was Isambard Kingdom Brunel?

Last term we started a history topic about the Victorians. This term we are going to look at a significant person from the Victorian era called Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his influence on our local area, Bristol.

This week, find out a little about Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Click here to see an animation about Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The following video shows ‘Isambard Kingdom Brunel’ telling the story of his life. Video

Geography

In this lesson we are going to be learning about the seven continents. We are going to learn what a geographer is and how important they are. We will be looking at the seven continents, comparing their size and location on our planet. We will then be learning all about what the equator is.

You will need a piece of paper and a pencil for this lesson. This is a Year 1 lesson but it would be good to see what you remember.
