Overview- English Term 5, Week 5 (w/c 18th May)
Doodle and Bug Club
Keep up the great work on the Doodle English and Spelling apps. I know a lot of you are finding these a lot of fun. Keep up all the reading you are doing at home. It’s always good to share a story with your parents but, if they are busy, you could read to a younger sibling or to yourselves. Audio stories are also really nice to chill out to. Some of you have been really enjoying the Bug Club eBooks too. These are really good for checking your comprehension as you read.
Activity 1
This week’s home learning is linked to our Victorian topic. On Tuesday (May 12), it was International Nurses day throughout the world. This year we have more than one reason to celebrate the day as it not only marks the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing this year, but also the world is facing a huge medical challenge where nurses worldwide have put their lives at stake to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
Firstly, I would like you to find out about Florence Nightingale. I have created a lesson of activities using a resource called ‘Twinkl Go.’ This includes a video, an interactive power point and several other activities. Please look at these to find out more about Florence Nightingale. Please see the screenshot below to show you how to access the lesson.
The ‘Twinkl Go’ website is https://www.twinkl.co.uk/go and you need to click 'Sign in' to enter the pin.

Please let me know if you have any issues accessing the lesson using this pin. I think it will come up initially with an animated video and then you can click ‘Other resources’ below to access more activities. The power point, which I would like you to view, is under ‘printable resources’ for some reason.
Activity 2
Please complete the reading comprehension and answer the questions about Florence Nightingale. Parents, as always, please help your child to read the text if it is difficult for them.
Activity 3
With many people working hard in essential jobs, separated from their families, or unable to visit friends, this is the perfect time into the lockdown for you to write to someone that you think will be cheered up by your letter.
For this task, you are writing in role as yourself. Because of this, you can write freely, informally and in your own style. Your main job is to make someone smile.
You could write to:
- A family member such as an aunty/uncle, grandparent, cousin, brother or sister, parent or anyone that you care about!
- An NHS worker or other essential worker to say thank you. These could include doctors and nurses, recycling people, the village store and people who risked their lives and kept going throughout the pandemic.
- An elderly member of the community to show them that you care
- Your teacher or someone at school (we’d love to hear from you)
- A friend

Activity 4
We have discovered during the last few weeks that superheroes come in many shapes and sizes. Draw and label your own superhero. This could be a real person or a superhero that you've created.
Include in your labels:
- your superhero's name
- what their super power is
- what they do
- special features
Extension
Create a comic strip with lots of drawings and speech bubbles to tell a story about your superhero.
