Overview- Term 5, Week 3

Activity 1

This week’s learning is linked to our term’s science focus. Please complete a reading comprehension about minibeasts and answer the questions as best you can. You can choose your level of challenge, with C2 being more challenging than C1. Adults, if your child finds the reading a little difficult, you can read and answer the questions together.

Activity 2

Please do some handwriting practice today. Please see the handwriting sheet attached. I would like you to please practise on lined paper or in your home learning book.

Activity 3

Look at the minibeast information cards to find out more about the minibeasts that might live in your garden, then use the minibeast hunt and location sheet to go on a minibeast hunt in your garden. How many minibeasts from this list did you find? Did you discover some other minibeasts that weren’t on the list? Can you find out what they are?

Activity 4

Today your challenge is to write a ‘What am I?’ riddle about a minibeast. I have included a power point of simple examples to get you thinking but I’m sure you are able to create much cleverer clues than these. A good tip is to start with more general clues eg. number of legs and get more specific. You want other people to guess what your minibeast is but not straight away. The writing riddles power point gives you some good examples and tips.

Top tips for writing riddles

  • Write at least 6 clues about different things.
  • Use present tense (mostly!)
  • Try to be clever!
  • Begin each sentence with a capital letter and end it with a full-stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
  • Start your clues in different ways.
    • Useful sentence starters:   I         Sometimes      Usually    Often              If          When                  You
  • Finish with a question – What am I?
  • Draw a picture of the answer under a flap at the bottom of the page. Can people guess what it is without having to sneak a peek?

Activity 5

Create a one page fact file about a minibeast of your choice. You may need to write some questions and do some further research using books or the internet. It would be good to include information about appearance, diet and habitat, and other fascinating facts.

Here is an example of what your fact file might look like:

You can present your fact file in poster form. If you have access to a computer, you could type up your poster and find pictures to include but handwriting written and illustrated posters are just as good. You may even want to produce a power point.

Doodle and Bug Club

Keep up the great work on the Doodle English and Spelling apps. I know a lot of you are finding these a lot of fun. From my phone conversations with you, I know a lot of you are doing a lot of reading at home. Keep it up! Some of you have been really enjoying the Bug Club eBooks too. These are really good for checking your comprehension as you read.

Top tip -  To move the books to your library, you need to have completed all the question bugs. You’ll know if you have  because the bugs will be asleep.
