Week 5

This week we will be continuing to explore the book 'Cloud Tea Monkeys' that we looked at last week.

Monday 18th May

Watch the video below. The teacher in this video will talk you through your English lesson for today.

Today, you will be finding out a bit more about the Author of the book Mal Peet. This is his website https://malpeet.com/  Maybe there is another book he has written that you'd like to read.

We will be learning about different sentence types today: statements (fact), commands (order), questions, exclamation (often start with 'How' or 'What'). Make sure you know how to punctuate each type of sentence.

Then, you will be starting the process of writing a report using these different sentence types.

Make sure you punctuate them correctly.

Friday 22nd May

Today will be our last lesson on the book 'Cloud Tea Monkeys'. We will be starting by learning about homophones (words that sound the same but are spelt differently and mean different things).

You will be finishing off your report today by adding an introduction and conclusion.

It might be nice for you to write your whole report up in neat. Don't forget to use your best, neatest, joined writing. You could then illustrate it and email it to Miss Dicks to show her your finished piece.

You do not need to buy the book, as Miss Dicks has bought a copy and uploaded a photo of each page in the gallery below.

Please don't read the whole book in one go!

This week, each day you can watch a video of a teacher who will give you some activities to do and parts of the book to read. You can read the book yourself or, if you have a parent or older brother o sister who is able to, they could read it to you. Please make sure you ask if there are any words you don't understand.

Monday 11th May

Watch the video below and follow the instructions. For today's lesson, you will be asked to go on a tea hunt!  You might want to search the cupboards before you start and see if you can find a few different types of tea to try!

You will be learning about noun phrases (a group of words that describes a 'thing') and writing an advert so you will need a sharp pencil and some lined paper.

Use lined paper and a sharp pencil.

Don't forget to start it correctly and use a comma like below

Dear diary,

Remember to check your spelling and punctuation when you have finished.

If you are especially proud of your writing, you could ask your parents to email it to Miss Dicks.

Here are the pages for you to read today. Click on the picture to enlarge it.

Friday 15th May

Today, we are going to be changing verbs (doing words) into the past tense. We will explore the difference between regular verbs (ed endings) and irregular verbs (where you have to change the word more).

Then, we are going to write a letter. Think carefully about your spelling and punctuation. Make sure you have a sharp pencil ready!

Challenge: can you write in the present perfect (...you have...) tense?

Here are the final pages. I hope you enjoyed the story!

Week 3

This week, we are looking at Non-Chronological Reports. These are basically reports which are not written in order of time (like a recipe or set of instructions would be). As you read the different reports about a variety of games, start thinking of which game you might choose to write your report about.

Monday 4th May

Open the document below and read the Non-Chronological Report about Lego Star Wars. Use a dictionary or ask someone if you don't know what all of the words mean.

If you can print the report, use a highlighter to find the key features of a Non-Chronological Report (or just write down the key features). Use the 'Revision Card' in the document below to help you.

Then, read the report about 'Just Dance'. Which game do you think you would prefer? Why? Which report do you prefer? Why?

Tuesday 5th May

Today, read the reports on Mario Kart and Zelda in the document above.

If you can print the reports, use a highlighter to look for any technical language - these are important words which help the reader understand more about the game. Eg: controller or gameplay (if you can't print the sheets, just write these words down).

After you've finished, or if you need a bit of help, look at the 'Technical language to spot' sheet. Did you find those words? Did you find some other words of your own? On the sheet, or on paper. Write each word out. Then, using the texts to help you, write an explanation of what these technical words mean.

Wednesday 6th May

First, read the FIFA 19 review in the document below. Then, use the revision card to spot the key features of a Non- Chronological Report (I bet you are really good at this by now!).

Next, play some games! You could play a board game with a member of your family or you could play a computer, play station or x-box game. In the document below, there is a link to some computer games on the BBC website.

While you play, start to think about which game you would like to write a Non-Chronological Report about.

Thursday 7th May

Today, you are going to write your plan for your Non-Chronological Report.

First, chose your game. Make sure it's one you know quite a lot about and have played a few times. Then, use the 'Game Notes' Sheet in the document above to help you plan your writing. For the plan, just write bullet points and key ideas (you don't need to write in full sentences). There is an empty box for you to chose your own heading and add some extra information.

On the back of the sheet, you could write any other key words or technical language you would like to include. Also, think about the punctuation you would like to use. Could you challenge yourself to include questions? Maybe you could use brackets to add some extra information? How about a colon to introduce a list?

( ) ? : , .

Friday 8th May

Today, you are going to write your Non-Chronological Report!

You could look back at some of the reports you've read this week and think about which words or phrases you really liked and could include in your writing. Think carefully about how you want to set it out. Look back at the examples for inspiration.

Please write in your best, neatest joined writing with a sharp pencil. Please write in full sentences and try to extend your sentences using some of these conjunctions:

as, because, so, while, if, when, for, ensuring, including, enabling

Accurate punctuation is very important. Can you use all of these?

( )  ?  :  ,  .

When you have finished your writing, take a break. Later on, go back and check your writing carefully.

Does it make sense?

Have you punctuated it correctly?

Use a dictionary to check your spellings.

Then, you could illustrate your report with some pictures.

Once you have finished, email it to Miss Dicks :)

Week 2 (wb 27th April)

This week, we are going to be looking at poetry. What is a poem? How can you recognise them? How is a poem different to a story? Earlier in the year, we wrote some rhyming poems. Do all poems rhyme?

Monday 27th April

Today, read the poem 'The Torch' by Michael Rosen (in the document below).

Then, watch him perform the poem using this link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnrHpytIMRM

On a piece of paper (in your best, neatest, joined handwriting) copy out these questions and write your answers.

1) What do you think of the poem?

2) Which is your favourite sentence? Why?

3) What do you think of Michael's performance?

4) What is it that makes his performance interesting to watch?

5) Have you ever broken something? What was it?

6) How did you feel when you had broken it?

Maybe you try and perform this poem to a member of your family in the style of Michael Rosen.

Tuesday 28th April

Can you remember what an apostrophe is? What does it look like? Can you remember the 2 ways we use apostrophes?

1) For a contraction - when we join two words together. Eg: Can + not = can't

The apostrophe goes in the gap where the letter is missing.

2) To show possession - that something belongs to someone. Eg: Sophie's hat.

Top tip - Some people have special names that end in an S Eg: James, Carys, Lucas

In these cases, the apostrophe goes after the S. Eg: James' coat.

In the document above, there is a 'Learning Reminder' sheet about apostrophes. Read that and make sure you understand.

Re-read the poem The Torch by Michael Rosen. If you can, print the poem and highlight all of the apostrophes you can find. If not, just point out all of the apostrophes.

For each apostrophe, work out if it is for a contraction or  to show possession (don't get confused by the speech marks!)

For each contraction, write out what the two separate words would be. Eg: for can't you would write could not.

Then, in the document above, find the Apostrophes for possession sheet - pairs of sentences sheet. If you have printed it, write on the sheet, if not, you can write on paper. You need to re-write the sentence by changing the order of the words and adding in the apostrophe.

Wednesday 29th April

Can you remember the learning we did yesterday about apostrophes?

Today, look at the sheet Apostrophes for Possession - pairs of sentences Blank Sheet.

Either print the sheet or write on paper.

Go around your house and make up pairs of sentences (like the ones you did yesterday) with possessive apostrophes.

Remember to write with neat, joined writing!

Then, read another Michael Rosen poem (at the bottom of the same document) called 'Forks'.

What do you think of this one?

Can you find any apostrophes in there? What are those apostrophes for?

Thursday 30th April

Today, spend some time watching or reading other poems by Michael Rosen. You could take a look on his youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/MichaelRosenOfficial

My favourite is 'Chocolate cake'. The Stone Age one is good too.

Watch a few and choose your favourite.

Tomorrow, you are going to write a poem in the style of Michael Rosen. Choose one of his poems as inspiration.

Then, start to plan out your poem. What will it be about? Write down some words you'd like to include.

Friday 1st May

Today, you are going to write your poem. Be creative!

You could do a rough draft first and then write it up in neat.

Once you've finished, illustrate the poem.

Then, perform it to a member of your family. Try to make your face as expressive as Michael Rosen's!

Ask a member of your family to take a photo of your finished poem and email to the Year 3 mailbox to show Miss Dicks. If it's really neat and well presented, it might get put up in our online gallery! :)

Term 5 - English

Week 1 (wb 20th April) - Fantastic Mr Fox

You will need some paper and pencils for your English learning this week as you will be building up to writing an animal story. You could use a notebook if you have one or simply write on some paper (lined if possible). Please keep it safe as Miss Dicks would love to see what you've done when we are back at school.

When you write, please use a sharp pencil. Have a rubber ready - just in case!

Remember, in Year 3, we always use our best, neatest, joined writing.

Produce learning you can be proud of.

If you have a copy of the book that would be great - but not essential. The key parts of the text are included below. After lesson 1, see if you can watch the film. It is available to watch for free on Youtube.

If you have a printer, you can print the learning for each day but it is not essential.

I hope you enjoy the story - it's a good one!

Wednesday

Today, focus on writing a plan for your version of the story. Choose a different animal. Ideally, an animal you know a lot about and an animal that lives in a group or pack as a family.

Write about each animal in your family.

What are they like?

What are their personalities and characteristics?

Plan the adventure.

What do they want or need?

How do they try to get it?

What goes wrong?

Thursday

Today, write your story. You can either write it straight in your best, neatest joined writing or you can do a rough draft and write it up in neat afterwards. Try to use lined paper if possible. Split your story up into paragraphs.

Can you include speech? - Can you remember how to use inverted commas correctly?   "A     ,"

Can you include some of these conjunctions?

while, who, which, as, when, after, if, because, although

Friday

Today, do the editing and checking.

First, read through your story. Does it make sense?

Then, check the punctuation. Capital letters, full stops, question marks. Inverted commas (speech marks).

Finally, check the spelling. Use a dictionary to help you.

When you have finished, read it out to a member of your family. What do they think?

You could illustrate it as well if you like.

Term 4 - English - Europe

As part of our learning about Europe, Year 3 children will be creating information leaflets about their chosen European City.

The leaflet should be on A4 paper and could be hand written (using neat, joined writing) or typed (Publisher is a good program for this). Encourage children to plan their leaflet first and consider the layout and what they want to include in each section Eg: Map, location, Places to Visit, Climate, Food etc.

Accurate punctuation and spelling is important. Children should be checking their own spellings using a dictionary (they are used to doing this at school). Encourage children to challenge themselves to use question marks, brackets to add extra information and commas after fronted adverbials (Amazingly, After that, Interestingly etc).

I have uploaded an example below (WAGOLL).

English

Activity 2

Children could write a letter and make a picture to send to an elderly person to keep them company. In the letter, encourage children to think about the language they use to make it an interesting and positive letter. Can they include rhetorical questions? Maybe they could plan their letter to include 2 or 3 paragraphs about different topics. They could write this using their best handwriting and post (maybe you could take a photo to show Miss Dicks!).

Activity 3

In the packs that went home is your NFER Reading Paper from Term 3. There is a copy of the Reading Texts in your pack too. The children could re-read each section (one at a time) and then have a go at any questions they missed out. Then, look at any questions they got wrong. Can they see what mistake they made?

TOP TIP- All of the answers are in the text! Use a highlighter to help you scan for key words and the answers.
