Overview- English Term 5, Week 4
Doodle and Bug Club
Keep up the great work on the Doodle English and Spelling apps. I know a lot of you are finding these a lot of fun. From my phone conversations with you, I know a lot of you are doing a lot of reading at home. Keep it up! Some of you have been really enjoying the Bug Club eBooks too. These are really good for checking your comprehension as you read.
Day 1
This week’s learning is also linked to our term’s science focus about animals. Please read the eBook called ‘The Cautious Caterpillar.’ This is an interactive book where you need to click on the question marks and think about the questions. Take your time over time and really think about the questions.
Please do some handwriting practise today. Choose a sheet from the handwriting folder and practise in your books.
Day 2
Sequence the pictures from ‘The Cautious Caterpillar’ book in order. Then write one or two sentences about each to retell the story. If the sheet provided is not big enough, please sequence in your books instead.Day 3
Find out about the life cycle of a butterfly. Please read through the reading comprehension and answer the questions. Most children should be able to manage the second or third reading comprehension sheet this week (They are all on the same document so make sure you only select pages to print that you need.) Choose the level that you think is most appropriate for your child.
Day 4
Today you are going to be writing your own explanation text to explain the life cycle of a butterfly.
Your explanation text needs to include the following:
- Title
- Introduction sentence eg. This page will explain how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly.
- You need to write at least two sentences to explain what happens at each of the four main stages- egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly
- Use time adverbials eg. first, next, then, finally to show the sequence of events.
- Make your sentences interesting by starting them in different ways.
Extension: Use conjunctions such as when, if, but, and, so , because to join to two sentences together to make one longer sentence.
In preparation for writing your explanation text, watch these two videos.
The first is an explanation about life cycles from BBC Bitesize.

The second is a time lapse of a butterfly metamorphosis- beautiful!

If you would like to, you could cut and paste these photographs of the butterfly life cycle to include in your explanation text or perhaps you want to draw your own?
This may take two days to complete.
Day 5
Write a diary entry from the perspective of a butterfly. Write about a typical day in the life of a butterfly. Use the first person and you can make it as humorous and far-fetched as you want today.
