This week, we will continue using the Oak Academy for our English lessons. On their website, the children will watch a video of a lesson taught by a teacher. They will then be given some activities to have a go at.
These lessons will build up skills throughout the unit and the children will produce a final written piece in lesson 5. Use the button in the right hand corner of the screen to navigate between sections of the lesson. You can pause the video and come back to it at any point.
If you have not finished last week's lessons, it might be worth finishing those off before starting a new unit.
This week, we will be reading space stories!
Please also encourage your children to read their e-books on Bug Club
Monday 6th July
Let's warm up our brains with a phonics lesson to start. Today, we will be learning the ' z ' sound.
Phonics - z

Now we are warmed up, let's start the main part of our lesson. Click on the link below to watch the video and make sure your child has a pencil and paper ready to do the activities. You may need to help your child with pausing the video at the right times. This week, we are going on an adventure to Outer Space. We begin the week by learning about The Solar System that we live in. Afterwards, we will design our own planet for our own aliens to live on.
Lesson 1: Space - design our own planet
Tuesday 7th July
Let's start today with a phonics lesson again. Today we will be learning the 'y' sound.
Phonics - y

Now, we can start the main part of our lesson. Today, listen to the story which is about aliens. Listen carefully to the instructions. You will need a pencil and paper as well as a ‘teddy talk partner’. You will be thinking about your favourite part of the story and have to justify your opinions by answering ‘why’ questions. We also think about the moral of the story and consider why it is important not to judge people based on their appearance.
Lesson 2: Space - to listen to a story
Wednesday 8th July
Today's phonics lesson is on the ' x ' sound.
Phonics - x

Now, we can start our main activity. Click on the link below to start. In this lesson, we remember the story we heard yesterday and draw a story map to help us retell it. You will need a writing pencil, coloured pencils and your teddy talk partner. An adult might need to help you fold the paper into 6 sections. Today, we think about the appearance of the character as we plan to write a character description later this week.
Lesson 3: Space - to commit a story to memory
Thursday 9th July
Today, we will be designing our own alien to live on our planet. We will think carefully about its appearance and label the different parts of our alien. When you’re done, give your alien a name and bring it along to tomorrow’s lesson, where we write a character description.
Lesson 4: Space - to describe a character’s appearance
Friday 10th July
In this lesson, we will bring our aliens to life! We will write sentences about their appearance focusing on sounding out the words independently. After the lesson, you can create your own aliens at home using playdough, junk modelling or paint. You will need your alien picture, a pencil, some resources to make your alien with and your teddy talk partner.
When you have finished, try to re-read your writing. Does it make sense? Is there anything you have missed out? Can you check that you have used capital letters and full stops?
Lesson 5: Space - to write a sentence about a character
When you have finished your character description, ask your parents to take a photo of it and upload it to Tapestry so Miss Williams can see it. She is really looking forward to reading your character descriptions.
