English

This week, we will continue using the Oak Academy for our English lessons. On their website, you will watch a video of a lesson taught by a teacher. Then, you be given some activities to have a go at.

These lessons will build up skills throughout the unit and you will produce a final written piece in lesson 5. Use the button in the right hand corner of the screen to navigate between sections of the lesson. You can pause the video and come back to it at any point.

If you have not finished last week's lessons, please finish those off first before starting a new unit. Remember to take a photo of your final piece every Friday to email in.

This week, we will be exploring newspaper articles. You might want to ask your parents to buy a newspaper for you to read or you could read some articles online.

Don't forget the brilliant e-books on Bug Club.

Monday 15th June

To warm up your brain, do some Doodle Spellings or Nessy (if you usually do Nessy at school).

Then, get started on today's learning. In this lesson you’ll be reading a WAGOLL and answering questions around it. Read the WAGOLL carefully and don’t just guess the answers! All of the answers are in the text! Answer the questions in your book or on lined paper. Please use your neat, joined writing and check your punctuation carefully too.

Lesson 1 News Report: Reading Comprehension – Fact Retrieval

Tuesday 16th June

To warm up your brain today, do some Doodle English.

Then you are ready to start today's activity. This lesson is all about inference which is those ‘clue’ questions. Find clues in the text to help you answer the questions. Look carefully at how the teacher answers the questions.

Lesson 2 - News Report: Reading Comprehension – Inference

Wednesday 17th June

To warm up, have a go at this spelling activity sheet. How many words can you spell correctly?

Then, start today's main lesson. In this lesson, you are given the key features that are included in a newspaper report. Write these down so you can refer back to them when you’re writing on Friday. You do not need to include relative clauses as we haven’t covered this yet in Year 4.

Lesson 3 - News Report: Identifying the features of a text

Thursday 18th June

Ask a parent or older brother or sister to test you on the spellings from yesterday. How many can you remember?

Then, get ready for today's lesson. Today, we will be revising how to punctuate speech correctly. We have done lots around inverted commas and speech in Year 4...can you remember how to use inverted commas (speech marks) correctly?

Lesson 4 - News Report: SPaG focus – Inverted commas

Friday 19th June

Start by watching this video to improve your vocabulary. Maybe you'll learn some new words that you can use in your writing.

Vocabulary - Sad Words

Today, you will be writing your news report. Use the WAGOLL to help you. Watch the video carefully because it gives you lots of help and ideas.  Please write neatly with your best joined handwriting. Make sure you include speech and punctuate it correctly using inverted commas.

When you have finished, check your writing carefully. Does it make sense? Use a dictionary to check your spelling.

Lesson 5 - News Report: Write a news report

When you have finished, ask your parents to take a photo of your fantastic writing and email it to the Year 4 email address. Mrs Stewart and Mrs Simmons are really looking forward to reading your reports.
